ROPT migrates all tools to AWS for sustainable performance

Moritz Meyer

ROPT collects millions of data points daily from a wide variety of sources. Our highest priority is to process this data reliably and make it available in ROPT extremely quickly. As the nature and scope of our tools and analytics become more complex, we decided to migrate to AWS (Amazon Web Services). We can only say: The effort was worth it!

Read the interview with our experienced development partner NFQ to learn more about using AWS for an Amazon Analytics tool.

What makes AWS cloud computing so special and why it is so well suited for Amazon analytics software?

Cloud is more flexible and imposes less restrictions and limitations on how you can run your business software. Moreover, there are 5 areas which AWS focuses on to ensure best results for the business.

  1. Operational Excellence includes the ability to support development and run workloads effectively, gain insight into their operation, and continuously improve supporting processes and procedures to deliver business value.
  2. Security includes the ability to protect data, systems, and assets to take advantage of cloud technologies to improve your security.
  3. Reliability encompasses the ability of a workload to perform its intended function correctly and consistently when it’s expected to. This includes the ability to operate and test the workload through its total lifecycle.
  4. Performance Efficiency includes the ability to use computing resources efficiently to meet system requirements, and to maintain that efficiency as demand changes and technologies evolve.
  5. Cost optimization includes the ability to run systems to deliver business value at the lowest price point.

In every single mentioned area, AWS has specific technologies, best practices and case studies to justify its advantages.

What types of servers does ROPT use and how can it scale with AWS?

ROPT uses Kubernetes which is designed to scale and scaling with Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) is effortless.

We have to update an enormous amount of product data every day. How can we guarantee the best possible performance for millions of product updates using AWS?

Resources elasticity is the key property here. You can scale up/down your environment at any time based on your workload size.

This is one of the core advantages that enables it to ensure high performance when it is needed at the same time and have optimal costs when workloads are decreased.

We are configuring a combination of rules that monitors system workloads and adds or removes extra resources once certain thresholds are hit.

What is NFQ’s experience and expertise in AWS?

NFQ has been providing AWS services to its customers since 2013. In 7 years NFQ managed to serve dozens of international customers from various industries (travel, fintech, catering, shared economy etc.). Some of our referenced customers are HomeToGo, Home24, Casevacanza, Eatfirst, Alaiko.

Speaking of future trends, we see tremendous interest from the market to leverage the advantages of AWS serverless technologies and data warehouse solutions. And it applies not only for specific businesses with certain requirements. Both technologies are already widely used and deliver significant value to various industries.

Serverless services: AWS Lambda helps customers to run their code without managing or provisioning any servers. Customers don’t need to worry about the underlying architecture.

These types of solutions fit very well for short-running tasks where you don’t need to customize the OS environment. And you pay per invocation of service rather than spending money on keeping server resources running all the time and waiting for the workload.

We also see that customers want to leverage out their data more deeply. Besides essential business intelligence insights, that are mostly answering the question “what has happened?“, Customers are more and more thinking about creating data lakes and running predictive analysis which is mostly about  “what will happen next?” That is where AWS Redshift services can help.

Seeing huge interest in mentioned technologies, NFQ is focusing to invest a lot in building up and maintaining competencies to support those market needs.
